Homemade Brown Sugar

Yeppers. You read that right. These days if I am going to do some baking, first I turn and look at the Brown Sugar jar. If it’s “low” I just get out 2 ingredients and get busy because here in Germany there is no such thing as Brown Sugar. Oh, you can get sugar that is brown, but it’s raw cane sugar and not what we Americans use for everything from topping our Oatmeal, to a key ingredient for Oatmeal cookies. This recipe is so easy, peasy that I may never purchase Brown Sugar again.

Come on. Let’s get busy!

Sugar and Molasses

Homemade Brown Sugar

2 Ingredients and 5 minutes! Really and truly, that's all we need to make delicious homemade Brown Sugar. If the stores are closed or you're 10 miles from town and it's snowing like crazy, you can still make apple crisp or cookies or top off that hot bowl of oatmeal.

Prep Time 5 mins
Total Time 5 mins
Servings 2 Cups

Ingredients

  • 2 Cups white sugar
  • 2 TBSP Molasses

Instructions

  • Get out a medium size mixing bowl and a pastry cutter. A couple of forks will work too if you don't have a pastry cutter. Pour 2 cups of sugar into the bowl and drizzle in the 2 TBSP of Molasses.
  • Take the pastry cutter or your forks and smoosh this together righteously! Keep at it. In a minute or 2 it will start coming together nicely. Keep going until most of the molasses is absorbed into the sugar. Anywhere from 3-5 minutes.
  • The goal is too have it end up looking like this. There will still be some flecks of Molasses, but it will be one bowl of yummyness. That's it! Happy baking friends!

I’m switching over to organic ingredients more and more. I’ve been frustrated that the organic brown sugar is too coarse and/or dark. Instead of repeatedly requesting exactly what I want from the local Co-Op and repeatedly getting the too dark and coarse brown sugar, I’m going to make my own organic brown sugar. Thanks for the proportions, Karen!
